Is hydrolysed collagen (collagen peptide) simply a protein that will be digested?

This is a common misconception. Traditionally it was thought that all protein is broken down and digested in the same manner. However, in recent years, more and more studies have been conducted with scientific evidence showing this to be untrue. In fact, after ingestion, collagen peptides have been shown to resist peptidase digestion and are absorbed into the blood circulation system at relatively high levels.

Peptides derived from marine collagen help with the formation of collagen by stimulating fibroblast growth and encouraging the production of extracellular matrix components, meaning it stimulates your own system into creating collagen. Numerous studies have concluded that the absorption rate of deep-sea collagen by the human body is as high as 95%-98%, but will vary depending on an individual’s body condition and health. Read what Dr Stefanie Williams, medical director at European Dermatology London (eudelo.com) had to say here.

Is Absolute Collagen Superior To Other Products?

Liquid supplements have been shown to be more effective than pills or powders as a delivery mechanism. One 10ml sachet of Absolute Collagen contains the same amount of active ingredients than 10 to 15 pills in a more easily digestible format.

Because it is sourced from fish, marine collagen is protected from diseases and viruses that can affect animal products such as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (“Mad Cow Disease”), Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Bird Viruses.

There are many products and brands that claim their collagen supplement or collagen builder contains collagen or hydrolysed collagen. Typically they do not contain any hydrolysed collagen or collagen peptides. Instead, they are mostly made up of 3 amino acids glycine, proline & hydroxyproline which together represent about 50% total amino acid content of the collagen helix chain.

You need up to 18 different amino acids in the right quantities and ratio to create a collagen molecule. These products also lack other minor but important amino acids necessary to construct a complete collagen molecule helix chain. Which is why Absolute Collagen formula contains hydrolysed marine collagen.

Research shows that due to its very low molecular weight, hydrolysed collagen is absorbed at a higher level into the bloodstream and circulated throughout the body more easily than other forms of collagen such as gelatin.

When it comes to beauty and health products, the popularity of fish-derived collagen continues to grow. This is due primarily to a preference for marine ingredients over those sourced from beef, pork, or chicken. Fish collagen is also free from the risk of pathogens that cause diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
