At Absolute Collagen, we’re proud to be the original collagen specialists. We’ve got the highest concentration of pure premium collagen in the smallest liquid dose on the market, and we keep our Absoluters informed about all things collagen.

Today, we’re going to be talking about collagen boosting foods - what are they, what do they actually do, and are they an adequate substitute for a collagen supplement?

What are collagen boosting foods?

Collagen boosting food is a catch-all term for foods which can support the body’s natural collagen production. However, there are a couple of different types of collagen boosting foods.

Some, like fish, chicken and broth made from animal bones, contain collagen in small quantities. This is because collagen is derived from animal sources - at Absolute Collagen, we use premium marine collagen taken from the skin of fish heading for human consumption, so there’s no waste. In order to get the same amount of collagen as one sachet of Absolute Collagen from eating fish skin itself, you’d need to eat an enormous amount of fish!

Others, meanwhile, contain various natural ingredients that are necessary for collagen production, but do not contain any collagen themselves. For vegans and vegetarians, these are the best options for boosting collagen production, as there is no such thing as vegan or vegetarian collagen.

For instance, citrus fruits, berries, and tropical fruits are all rich in Vitamin C which is essential for collagen production, while vegetarians can also support their natural collagen production by consuming egg whites, which contain proline, one of the essential amino acids necessary for collagen production.

What is bone broth?

This is one of the most common and well-known collagen boosting foods. Bone broth is a liquid which is made from boiled animal bones and connective tissue, then consumed for various health benefits. Common ingredients in bone broth include cow, chicken and fish bones. Although bone broth has long been valued as a staple of Eastern diets, it has traditionally not been so popular in Western countries until recent years.

Despite increasing popularity, however, a study comparing bone broth to collagen supplements found that bone broth is not as reliable a source of collagen as you might think. Taking a premium collagen supplement is actually better for ensuring a consistent and high quality collagen dose in your diet.

In order to absorb into the bloodstream, the collagen molecules need to be extremely small and have a very low Dalton weight - which native collagen molecules that naturally occur in bone broth will not.

In fact, native collagen is around 30,000 Daltons, while the hydrolysed collagen in Absolute Collagen is just 2000 Daltons.

What makes Absolute Collagen better than collagen boosting foods?

Absolute Collagen is our award-winning collagen drink. With 8000mg of premium hydrolysed Type 1 marine collagen in each 10ml sachet, and rich in essential Vitamin C, it is the most concentrated collagen available on the market, and ready to take straight from the sachet, any time, anywhere. This means it is far more convenient than collagen boosting foods, and provides the perfect ready-mixed dose.

Crucially, the collagen has been hydrolysed. This means the collagen molecules have been broken down into smaller chains of amino acids, also known as peptides, which can then pass through into the bloodstream.

It is highly bioavailable - which means it is effectively absorbed by the body - with a 90-95% absorption rate, far more effective than collagen boosting foods, and even more effective than collagen pills, which only have a 40-45% absorption rate.
